Cambodia (Penohm Pehn + Siem Riep)

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who read my last post, I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving. It's crazy to think that I was in Cambodia almost two years ago. However,  looking through my photos, reading journal entries, and listening to "Lemon" by N.E.R.D (feat. Rihanna) definitely brought all those memories back :)

After Thailand, we headed to Cambodia for an enrichment week. Thinking Beyond Borders has been here every single year and for all good reason, Bun (pronounced Boon). Boon  was our tour guide and had to be one of the most welcoming people that I have ever met. He even invited us to dinner at his house! Our first part of the week was spent in Phnom Penh. In Phnom Penh, we visited local temples, participated in a dance class, went on a sunset cruise, and explored. We delved into Cambodia's darker history and visited the Choeung EK Genocidal Center and the S21 Prison. For those who are unaware of the Cambodian genocide that occurred in the 1970's, or are interested in learning about it, I highly recommend reading the book "First They Killed My Father". The book is a memoir written from a five year old's perspective and goes in depth of her five years growing up during that time.

When we got to the Choeung EK Genocidal Center, our group broke off so that we could go at our own pace. As a photographer, I understand the importance of documenting, even the hard things. That being said, there comes a time when the camera should be put away in order to observe and respect the victims. If you're photographing at memorials, please stop. Not only is it incredibly distracting for those trying to observe, it's disrespectful to the victims and their families. It's important to share the tragedy of what happened in Cambodia through storytelling, not through photos of human skulls on your Instagram.

After Penohm Pehn, we drove to Siem Riep. On the way there, we pulled over for a tasty snack of tarantulas.. In Siem Riep, we also got to explore Angkor Wat for a couple of days. It was incredibly crowded and hot. One of the highlights was going to the Cambodian circus. It was a cirque du soleil style of show and I loved every minute of it.

Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for.....

If you fancy cats, Cambodian temples are the place to be.

On our way to dance class :)

Sustained two injuries on the trip & they were both the same, shutting my finger in the door.
Trying the local cuisine
Friend's restaurant. Highly recommend looking into their programs and see how they give back to the community https://friends-international.org/our-solutions/

Could it be possible? A place more crowded than Disneyland!

Largest religious monument in the world

Keeping up with seeing a monkey in every country I went to...

No better time to shave your hair then in the blistering heat :)

My favorite temple, Bayon (the face temple).

Bun being the best tour guide, ever.

Serious Temple Run vibes

Not a morning person unless it's for a sunrise shot ;)

If you know me, you know I love Reece's. I first discovered this spread in Thailand and was happily surprised when I found it in Cambodia. I may or may not still have a jar...
